Rockford Nursing Home Abuse Lawyers

When you make the decision to take your elderly family member to a nursing home, you put your trust in the people who work there to provide the care that is needed. While you can visit during the day, there are times when you might not be able to monitor everything that takes place in the nursing home. Unfortunately, there are a few types of abuse that are seen in nursing homes today. If you notice any signs, it’s important to contact the proper authorities as well as an attorney who can help you and your family get the justice that is deserved.

Physical Abuse
This is the most common type of abuse that you will see in a nursing home. There are many definitions of this kind of abuse, but overall, it encompasses any kind of physical force that could result in harm to the body or that causes any kind of physical pain for the victim. The abuse could be in the form of restraining the elder in a chair or in a bed, preventing the person from moving freely. Most of the time, the abuse involves a nurse, nursing assistant or another employee hitting the elder in some way. The elder could be beaten with a hand or an object, biting, shoving, or burning. Force feeding is also a type of physical abuse.

If you suspect that physical abuse has occurred, you need to look for signs, some that might not be present right after the abuse begins but that develop over the course of a few days and weeks. Broken bones are an obvious sign of physical abuse, but there are times that the abuse isn’t forceful enough to cause broken bones. Skull fractures are another indication, but this can lead to severe impairments, even death if the fracture is in certain locations of the head. Check the body for bruising of any kind. Sometimes, an elder might fall and get bruised. This is an incident that is often reported to the family. If you notice any bruises that are in odd areas of the body or that seem to come back again and again in the same areas, then this is likely a sign of abuse.

Look for any kind of marks that might be from a rope or an object, such as marks from the bristles of a brush. Wounds that suddenly appear or cuts in any area of the body need to be examined. Check the body for any sprains or dislocations. your family member might cry out in pain when touched or even claim that the injury was sustained because of an accident. Talk to other residents in the nursing home to find out if they have seen your family member fall or if the staff has noticed any falls that have occurred. If there isn’t any kind of evidence that falls have occurred, then you should speak with a doctor about X-rays and looking for other signs of abuse.

Tracking The Evidence
Once the elder is in a doctor’s office or hospital, the proper examinations can be performed to look for internal bleeding or other injuries that can’t be seen with the naked eye. If the tests reveal that physical abuse of any kind has taken place, then consult with an attorney who can help you get the compensation that is deserved and who can fight against the nursing home so that it’s properly punished for its actions. Keep records of any kind of diagnosis from your doctor or the hospital. You also need to take pictures of the signs that are seen so that the attorney can show them to the court.
